Marco Tamayo, the Cuban born guitarist with Austrian citizenship, renowned musician acclaimed by the Italian newspaper “L´Stampa” as “Il Re della Chitarra” (the king of the guitar), praised by musicians like John Williams, Leo Brouwer or Eliot Fisk, is one of the leading figures of the classical guitar worldwide. He has performed as soloist with famous orchestras like the Philharmonic of Turin; Italy, Philharmonic of St. Petersburg, Chamber Orchestra of St. Petersburg, Philharmonic of Culiacán; Mexico, Philharmonic of Havanna; Cuba, Oulu Philharmonic Orchestra; Finland, among others, and with famous conductors like Ennio and Andrea Morricone, Philipe Bender, Leo Brouwer, Paolo Ferrara, Gordon Campbell, Kurt Redel, Hannu Lintu, etc. Marco Tamayo has six albums on the market, three of them with the Naxos Label and countless reviews that express his, like commented by the guitarist Eliot Fisk: “(…) a perfect technical development and an extraordinary musical intelligency”(…)
Tamayo had won to his own several first prizes at major international guitar competitions like “Andrés Segovia” in Herradura and Granada (España), Michelle Pittaluga-Citá di Alessandria (Italia), Leo Brouwer competition (Havanna), among many others, having to his own more than 25 First prizes at these international events!
As former student of Nicolaus Hartnoncourt (Early Music), Antonio Alberto Rodríguez and Leo Brouwer (guitar), Anthony Spiri (Harpsichord), Eliot Fisk (guitar), and Reinhard Schmid (violin), Tamayo was offered a Professorship at the Mozarteum University, did his Habilitation on the 2006 as a Professor for classical guitar at the Mozarteum University, and since then he has achieved lot of international success for the students of the guitar class in Salzburg. Since the year 2005, he also teaches as Professor at the Landeskonservatorium in Klagenfurt. His class is visited by guitarist from all over the world, and his students are prize winners of international guitar contests. Some of them are on the way to major careers.
Taking into consideration his young age, (37) Tamayo has introduced a new way of approaching the instrument by his way of performing and teaching. His book: “Essential principles for the performance on the classical guitar” will come out in the next weeks by Chanterelle Verlag, Germany.
Mr. Tamayo is a regular invited juror by international guitar competitions and guess performer and teacher by many festivals around the world.
Tamayo’s 2011 tour has included Masterclasses at the New York Mannes Music College, concerts in Mexico, Russia, Italy and Germany. One of his next projects is a performance with conductor Justuz Frantz at the Luzern. Maestro Andrea Morricone has composed a guitar concerto that will be premiered next September by Marco Tamayo and the composer as conductor. For the year 2012 the schedule includes tours in Bahamas, GFA (Guitar Foundation of America), Russia, among others. Tamayo’s book Essential Principles of classic guitar technique is already sold out before it comes out by the Chanterelle Verlag. Marco Tamayo is a Savarez artist.
